The original museum was damaged in the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, but what has taken its place is one of the City’s coolest new modern pieces of architecture, designed by Swiss architecture firm Herzog & de Meuron. The collections of art from the native Americas, Africa, and the Pacific are fascinating, as well as the American art dating from the 17th–20th centuries. There is even an Andy Goldsworthy installation near the entrance, and fantastic views of the City on the observation floor in the twisting tower. The museum also has a café serving tasty bites made with organic and sustainable ingredients, and even better, it’s affordable. Be sure to take time to walk around the sculpture gardens as well.
