The innovative California Academy of Sciences (CAS) has been exploring, explaining, and protecting the natural world since 1853. A multifaceted scientific institution, the Academy is a leading-edge research institution, educational outreach foundation, and public museum. The Academy exemplifies its mission “to explore, explain and protect the natural world,” with engaging, ground-breaking research and exhibits and a breath-taking sustainably constructed structure to house the planetarium, aquarium, natural history museum, and more. Highlights of the building’s design include a 2 ½ acre Living Roof, solar canopy, water reclamation system, and walls insulated with recycled blue jeans, making it the greenest museum on the planet. The Academy also features the deepest coral reef exhibit in the world, a 4-story tropical rainforest, a towering T-Rex skeleton, a colony of African Penguins, and much, much more. The research department supports 46 world-class scientists, hundreds of researchers, and 11 fields of study, enforcing the scientific innovation that the Academy offers to the public. The Academy also offers educational opportunities for all ranges of people, from accredited teachers, scientists, and docents, to children, families, and learners of all ages.
