Joie de Vivre Hospitality Begins Development of Hotel Montgomery
San Francisco, CA (May 29, 2003)-JOIE DE VIVRE HOSPITALITY (www.jdvhospitality.com), known for its creative collection of lifestyle businesses in the Bay Area, announced today its plans for the historic Hotel Montgomery. Slated to open in Summer 2004, this property will be the fifth in Joie de Vivre's growing Silicon Valley collection of one-of-a-kind boutique hotels.
Hotel Montgomery is located in the heart of historic downtown San Jose and has been called "one of San Jose's strongest links to the past" by the city's Mayor Ron Gonzales. This 84 room landmark hotel is owned by San Jose Redevelopment Agency (SJRA).
The hotel's amazing transformation process began in January 2000 when the SJRA took the extraordinary step of relocating the hotel 186 feet south of its previous location to First and Paseo de San Antonio-at a cost of $8.5 million. The SJRA also contributed $4.5 million for a seismic retrofit and $6 million for the historic renovation of the hotel.
In August 2000, SJRA selected DivcoWest to renovate this important landmark and allow it to evolve into one of the few boutique hotels in Silicon Valley. DivcoWest is expected to begin renovations in November 2002.
Hotel Montgomery marries the past and present of beautiful San Jose featuring a striking Neo-Classical design steeped in casual elegance and comfort. A uniquely San Jose property, this historic structure bridges the nostalgia of the Valley's past with the forward-thinking needs of today's traveler. The hotel's lobby, guestrooms, meeting spaces and restaurant/bar evoke a sense of dramatic authenticity-full of interesting details and smart design features.
Los Angeles-based Texeira Interior Architecture and Design, lead by Glen Texeira, will provide the interior design services. Other significant creative partners include San Francisco-based Page & Turnbull Architects and Marta Fry Landscape Design.
The property will be managed by boutique hotel innovators, Joie De Vivre Hospitality. "The Montgomery Hotel is a timeless treasure and we are committed to preserving its character," says Chip Conley, founder and CEO of Joie de Vivre Hospitality. "We will closely follow historic guidelines set locally and by the Department of the Interior to celebrate the natural assets of this landmark. Hotel Montgomery is so unique in its ability to impart a sense of both history and the future. Our goal is to share this emotional connection with each person that walks through the doors of the Montgomery."
Based in San Francisco, Joie de Vivre Hospitality (www.jdvhospitality.com) is a creative collection of lifestyle businesses. As the Bay Area's fastest growing independent hospitality company, the Joie de Vivre portfolio features 20 boutique hotels and one day spa. These properties represent a total of 1713 rooms and include five distinctive restaurants and bars. Each property has been carefully designed to celebrate the San Francisco Bay Area through its unique visual style, high design principals, one-of-a-kind amenities and personalized service. Chip Conley, founder and CEO of Joie de Vivre Hospitality, says it best, "Our goal is to create landmark destinations full of soul and personality!"
