Lodging Magazine – Design + Construction

Future Features

The Hotel of Tomorrow (HOT) project, which was debuted to the industry at the Hospitality Design Expo in Las Vegas in May, challenged some of the most creative minds in hospitality to put together a hotel guestroom in the year 2025. Participants from Joie de Vivre, Wimberly Allison Tong & Goo (WATG), Hunter Douglas, Crypton, and Innovations in Wallcoverings Inc. gave Lodging a behind-the-scenes peek to see creative men and women at work.

Hunter Douglas' Bob Harnach says among all the groups the strongest theme was reducing "mass customization" – allowing the user to customize the surroundings they were in. "So, although you may not be in a majestic setting on the physical planet, you could make your room appear to be anywhere you wanted it to be." The concept of mass customization struck a chord among many of the participants. "The personalization aspect was very interesting," says Christian Strobel, vice president of strategy and business development for Joie de Vivre. "We normally think about it in boutique hotels to meet a certain psychographic. But the personlization of your own rooms is quite interesting. The idea is that you have a shell of a room that a person can come into and make the way they want it."
